I think, this Google Image Search’s “filter by color” feature is very useful. I can filter image search results not only by size (extra large, large, medium, and small) and image type (news content, faces, clip art, line drawing and photos) but also by color.

Google Image Search Results Color Filter

There are twelve colors available to be used as filter. I think it will be great if there are more colors to choose, or even custom color? But so far, it IS very useful.

In 2007, Google acquired Jaiku. I have an account there, but I don’t use Jaiku actively. I don’t know why, but I just felt that this service is not for me.

This month, JaikuEngine was released as an open source project. It’s available at Google App Engine. Google will not develop Jaiku code base and hand it to the community. Is it because Jaiku is not popular — compared to other microblogging services like Twitter? Or, Google wants to stop its development because Twitter is more promising?

quietube: YouTube without the distractions — It’s a bookmarklet to remove all comments and other visual elements from YouTube video. In short: display the video only.

chrome incognito

Google Chrome offers another type of window/browsing mode called “incognito mode”. When we’re using Google Chrome in incognito mode page information (website addresses, downloaded files will not be stored/logged in our browsing and download histories. And, when we close the “incognito window”, all new cookies will be deleted right away.

Read mode details about incognito mode at Google Chrome Help page.

In simple definition, it means we can use incognito for more private browsing. It’s about information on your side, not server’s. If the server logs your data (IP address, user agents, etc), your data will be recorded.

But, I don’t regularly — well, almost never — use it. My main reason is because I’m using Google Chrome — and other browsers — in a private computer. And, sometime browsing histories are useful. The download histories, too.

Moving Feedburner Feeds to Google Account

I did this few weeks ago. All my feeds under my Feedburner account had been integrated with my Google Account. I managed some feeds, not only for my blogs, but also some other blogs I maintain. It’s encouraged to move Feedburner into your Google Account. When did this, I had no problem. Google has some details about this.

books sm2

Google Book Search offers a great deal. We can now find more than 1.5 million public domain book for free. Not only that, we can also enjoy reading them in mobile devices like the iPhone and the T-Mobile G1. Use this address: http://books.google.com/books/m

If we’re using the mobile edition, it will display text for faster download. Nice!

Google’s New Favicon

Google has a new favicon (again!). Last June 2008, they did the same. It’s January 2009.

I just logged in to Google Reader to read new updates. And I saw something different. Well, not just small changes, but huge changes on its design. Google Reader is redesigned.

google reader new

I like its new design. It’s cleaner, no rounded corner there. Square is the new round? I like it!

I am not a person who got affected when there are major stock changes in the market. But, for those who need to track the stock information growth — and also use Google Spreadsheet, this is probably useful. Anyway, this will retrieve data from Google Finance.

There is a tutorial about tracking stocks in Google Spreadsheets

Instead of copying data into your worksheet, when the linked source changes, the cells in your spreadsheet will automatically update, which can save a lot of work if you pull reports regularly. This external data can be pulled from XML, other spreadsheet documents, and even (assuming you can bear to look) current and historical stock quotes from Google Finance.

Using this method, you can retrieve current stock information and also pull historical stock data. There are some spreadsheet samples you can download.

I use RSS reader to follow updates from my favorite sites. When I subscribed for the first time, I just loved those sites. I found them useful. But, right now I am thinking of re-organizing my subscriptions. Even the feedreader — I use Google Reader — has ability to keep the headlines, I don’t think that I can follow them all. I tried, and I was failed.

I ask myself about those feeds:

  • Do I need them? I mean, I really need to read those updates?
  • If I do not subscribe to those feeds, will I get impact? I mean, my work, my job, etc.
  • Do I need to subscribe to multiple feeds having similar contents?
  • Can I get updates using other methods? For example, having combined feeds using Yahoo! Pipes or RSS Mixer so that I only need to read contents I really need?

Those are some reasons. Right now, I review my subscriptions. Will delete some.

When I heard about Google Chrome, I downloaded right away. Even now I have it installed, but I do not use it for daily work. Mozilla Firefox and Opera are still on my top list.

If you’re using Chrome and you want to have different looks, there are some Google Chrome themes available to download. I haven’t tried to install a theme yet. Maybe later. Anyway, if you want to use some other themes, do not forget to install XChrome. What is XChrome?

XChrome is a theme manager for Googles Chrome browser, it allows users to install a skin in seconds without having to move default.dll around and it allows you to view the author and various other details before installing.
XChrome also allows users who do not have XChrome install to install themes by double clicking the themes .exe file, they are prompted to install the theme, they agree the theme is copied to Chromes Default.dll

Today, I had problem opening Google Reader. I am not sure what caused it, because I did nothing unusual using my laptop. I noticed that it happened after I had Google Chrome installed. But, I am NOT saying that Google Chrome caused this issue. Not sure about this (Thanks Yogi for the correction).

The problem was that I have my browsers stopped loading. I even tried almost all browsers installed on my laptop. No luck. Doh! I am sure it’s not about the internet connection. Because I could not figure out how to solve this issue, I tried to re-install Google Gears. Before I did that, I disabled Greasemonkey script used by Google Reader (in Firefox).

After having Google Reader re-installed, I opened Google Reader page again. Surprise! It’s back to normal again now. At least I do not have to switch to another web-based RSS reader.

When I heard about Google Chrome, I was very curious and really wanted to try it. Now, it’s available for download. I could not stop comparing Google Chrome with other browsers installed. Of course, I found that Mozilla Firefox and Opera are way much better than the first release of Google Chrome, at least right now.

Download an Install

Google Chrome Homepage (by Orangescale)

Unlike other browsers, we could not download the executable installation file. At first, we need to download an installer (around 475 KB), and run it. It will download the Google Chrome after we executed it. Wait for some moments, and you will be prompted to the next installation steps. The installation process was really straight forward. Everyone should be able to do it without problems. Anyway, Google Chrome is only available for Windows XP/Vista right now.

You may have heard that Google will launch its very own web browser shortly. It’s called Google Chrome. Currently, I already have some browsers installed, but Google Chrome seems promising. Here is what its developers said:

On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn’t the browser that matters. It’s only a tool to run the important stuff — the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go.

It’s said that Google Chrome combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier.

I’m curious about how it looks like. Google Blogoscoped provides some informative screenshots and other supporting details. The download link is not available yet, but it seems that it will be available at http://gears.google.com/chrome/ And, don’t forget to read Google Chrome Comic Book. It will explains many things about Google Chrome.

resnooze

There are many options we can use as reminders to make sure that we will not forgot something — appointment, paying bills, etc. Right now, for the web-based service, I use Google Calendar to manage some schedules. Most of them are sent by email.

Besides that, I also have some of them set on my phone. If you want to have a web-based service and want to have reminders sent to your email, you can try Resnooze. It’s a simple, but I think it’s pretty useful too.
