Amazon S3 Billing Statement Sample

In last September, I started to use Amazon S3 for some experimental purposes. And, it’s not that difficult — of course, I only use some basic action. CloudBerry Explorer and S3Fox are really helpful. Now, if you want to know the billing calculation — just in case you’re interested to try Amazon S3 (also with CloudFront), I have uploaded a sample billing statement from Amazon (click the thumbnail to enlarge).

For me, I think the price is still reasonable. Anyway, CloudFront service is optional. Of course, this billing statement is not only based on my blog usage. I have multiple sites and accounts there. Not all of my backup files are also available for public.

Getting Started with Amazon S3

After I signed up for Amazon S3 and CloudFront last week, I started to use it right away. Before that, I tried to get as many information as possible. It seemed easy. I had to deal with some new words like “bucket“, “Access Key ID“, and also “Secret Access Key“.

Amazon S3 — just like its name — is a storage service. What makes it different from “storage” in webhosting is that there is no FTP access. But, the mechanism of “moving your data to a storage server” is similar to FTP. In FTP, we will connect to your server using some basic information like hostname, username and password. In some cases, we will need an FTP port. And we can do it easily using FTP clients like Filezilla, CrossFTP, WinSCP, etc.

Amazon S3 uses a little bit different process. Just imagine “Access Key ID” as “username”, and “Server Access Key” as the FTP password. Both information are generated by the system and they’re not easy to remember.

For the upcoming Mozilla Firefox 3.5 release, Firefox will have its new logo. The current logo is designed by Jon Hicks (see article).

You are using an incompatible web browser, Facebook said

I almost have no problems accessing Facebook site using many different browsers. But, I sometime I found problems when using Opera 10 browser. It says that I’m using incompatible web browser. But, it only happens randomly, even when I do the same actions like reloading pages, clicking on the links. And so far, it only happens on Facebook-related pages.

The error page suggests me to use these browsers: Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Safari, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Flock. I do using Opera, but not the latest stable release. So, is it Facebook? Or, Opera 10 doesn’t play nice with Facebook yet? I’m using Opera Version 10.00 1 Build 1355 on Windows XP when I experience this problem.

Web Browsers’ Homepage Designs

I only visit web browsers’ sites when I want to download — sometime, I don’t even have to go to their sites to get updates — or, only when someone/something refers me to an address in those sites. Those are some possibilities. Their websites have beautiful designs, and sometime can be a great inspiration. :)

Yesterday, my Firefox browser applied an update. It’s now 3..0.6. Anyway, I set my Firefox to check for updates, just to make sure that I always have the updated version — including extensions. If you haven’t upgraded, you can do it.

Xoopit for Gmail

Xoopit for Gmail is a Firefox extension to enhance our Gmail account, including Google Mail and Google Apps for Domain. Using this extension, we can:

Search our stuff (messages, photos, videos, and other files)
Browse photos and videos from other services like Youtube, Flickr, etc.

Trojan for Firefox: Trojan.PWS.ChromeInject.A

Here are a news about trojan from Greasemonkey — a Firefox addon. It is identified by BitDefender.

BitDefender has identified this new bit of holiday cheer as Trojan.PWS.ChromeInject.A” (the ChromeInject suffix refers to the Chrome component of Firefox). The trojan installs itself into Firefox’s add-on directory, registers itself as Greasemonkey, and begins searching your hard drive for passwords, login details, your World of WarCraft account information, and your library card number.

Please note, this trojan is not actually the Greasemonkey add-on, and only identifies itself as such. Mozilla has confirmed that the official Greasemonkey release contained within Mozilla’s own extension repository (and available here) is malware-free. If you’re currently using Greasemonkey or are interested in doing so, there’s no reason to avoid the legitimate add-on at this time, so long as you download it from Mozilla’s page or an equally trusted source.

What does this trojan do?

Once installed, the trojan is capable of identifying over 100 web sites. When an infected user visits a site the trojan recognizes, the parasite comes to life and records the login/password details being transmitted. Presumably it then goes back to sleep, quietly keeping an eye on further system activity.

Geolocation

Geolocation is a JavaScript API that lets a web page query the browser’s location via JavaScript. It can be used to plot maps, give directions, attach location information to pictures, give a location for a weblog post and a pile of other things.

Add support for the CSS @font-face property. This property allows you to specify a true type font file that includes a specific font you want to use to render a web page.

WordPress Troubleshooting: WordPress Admin Area (Dashboard) Redirect Loop

Yesterday, I helped one of my clients with her WordPress-powered blogs. When I tried to find the solution — using search engines — I could not find any exact solution.

Problem overview

Okey, here’s the problem: When I tried to login to WordPress dashboard — not WordPress.com, but self-hosted — I always got these errors:

Have you disabled or blocked cookies required by this site?

NOTE: If accepting the site’s cookies does not resolve the problem, it is likely a server configuration issue and not your computer.

I’m not sure what caused this problem. I thought it was my browser (Firefox), but I got the same problem on other browsers.

Pushup: Encourage others to upgrade their browsers

I just added some Javascript file and CSS in this blog. You probably will notice them, or not. You will not see something different in this page if you’re using an updated internet browser. But, if you’re still using old browsers, you should see a notification — it’s on the upper right of the browser window — telling you about your browser status (updated or outdated).
