Welcoming Movable Type
in Webdev
If you use Movable Type, you probably heard that Six Apart launched Movable Type 3.31 few days ago. You can read the press release also.
If you’re a loyal reader of my blog, you see that my latest blog was powered by Textpattern. Before Textpattern, I have been with Blogger, b2 Evolution, WordPress, pMachine, and Movable Type. And I think some of you noticed that I enjoy making new themes, hacking, modifying the applications. Yeah, I am not a productive blogger (writer).
It is Movable Type time!

No… no… It does not mean that I do not like Textpattern. It does not mean that I hate WordPress. It does not mean that other blogtools are bad. Not at all. It is more about choosing a platform that works for me, a platform that I can give me what I need, a platform that I find easy to use. Probably, some bloggers think that Movable Type is not easy to customize. Some think that Movable Type is not friendly for those who have limited hosting space. And, some bloggers do not want to use Movable Type because it is not free. And there are probably hundreds of reasons. Okey, why not seeing from different perspective?
There are also some people who think that:
- Movable Type is easy to customize.
- Webhosting space is not a problem at all. 10 Mb, 50 Mb, 100 Mb? No problem.
- Movable Type template tags are easy to read. And if they are confused about what tags should be used, they can read the documentation.
- They feel safe. They do not need to be panic because of security issue. They feel okey even they use the old distribution.
Now, these are some news for you if you are still using Movable Type and want to use Movable Type:
Movable Type is free
I hope I understand it right. Movable Type News says:
We also continue to make our personal license for Movable Type even more open: The personal version of Movable Type is now completely free, and supports as many blogs and authors as you want.
I am sure it is a good news for Movable Type users — well, at least for me. Upgrade your Movable Type installation. If you need guide, Elise Bauer of Learning Movable Type has a great tutorial about the upgrade process.
Simplified and enhanced
If you have installed Movable Type before, I am sure that you know about Melody and Nelson. Now, you can say goodbye to Melody and Nelson. If you’re using MySQL as the database, your install process will be the same like another platform: create a database, run the install script.
In the latest version, there are many new and improved features. Worth to try.
Well, here I am now, still running a blog (in my 5th year of blogging). I am still working on the layout, and I enjoy it. :)

Haha, itu tahun berapa ya mas? Iya, itu ketika masih pakai MT. Terakhir pakai MT, desain kalau tidak salah yang gelap itu, ada gambar cewek… Hehehe… serasa dejavu gini… :D
Kalau dulu dalam static publishing, sekarang sedang mencoba dynamic publishing. Sementara ini sih lancar-lancar saja… :)

Thanks all for your comments…

I totally agree with Dental’s comment above. Did you enter the MT Style Contest?

Hi Thomas,
MT is very great! Yes, not very easy to customize, but very friendly to use. Well, my reason not to choose MT after 2 more years loveable moments is just only the license, and migrate to Textpattern. So, heard that they eventually change the license scheme, well what the hack, I think I’m more than ready to move to MT right now.
It doesn’t meant that TXP is not good, they are quite good, and powerful, and flexible, but only for me as developer. Well, TXP is powerfull to do anything, almost anything. But the user-interface is suck! Very hard to believe, very unbelieveable to understand. For our end-users, they are like a nightmare.
Yet, again to say, your design as always very-very nice.
Thanks for the infos.
