Me, myself and MT

Related to what posted at 6 LOG about “How are you using the tool (MT)“, it is an interesting question. And about the title, I am not talking about “Me, Myself and Irene“And I think it can be a nice topic to tell for everyone having weblog(s), I mean not only addressed to people using MT, but also other tools.

And of course I have my own experience with MT (now I am focusing on how I use MT for this site). And, quoted from the site:

… no commentary, no cussing, no judgments

It is started because I am addicted to weblog and curious to customize a site. When I started making a weblog, this is what I wanted: The template must be easy to modify (customize), I can run it in my webserver — I use shared hosting. That’s it. No more.

But as the weblog development itself, I want something more. The commenting system thing, trackback, archiving system, built-in search tools, multiple weblogs in a single installation, different layouts in different pages, etc. That’s why I moved from one to another blogtools.

First, the main weblog — about my daily journal. You can see the result now. Some items in top navigation, the sidebar, permalink, and archiving are made using the customization from the template management. And — of course — by implementing some MT plugins. And it also display ‘some parts’ of another weblogs made.

The second, my misc page. There, I write something as documentation. I know, actually it can be done without creating another new weblog, but since I want make the content management easier, I put it separated.

The third is the link collection page. Archived by month and category. In the main page, I put some latest links I posted. The template customization is quite challenging. But finally, I can — even not perfect, I can do it. And so far, I am satisfied with the result. :)

That is a the personal use — single contributor only. What about the its use for a community weblog having multiple contributors?

Using MT, I also made (as part of site development) Angkringan Network, a community site of some webloggers from Jogjakarta — and it also has some member from other regions, event countries. When I write this, it has fifty eight members. Before taking the decission on what blogtool used, the team also having some different arguments. Some suggested pMachine, the other suggested WordPress, and there are some also suggested to develop it from scratch using a self-made tools. Considering the features will be put in the site, the content management (members, articles posted by members, other contents, etc.) the decission has been made. Angkringan Network uses MT.

Before and after MT 3.0 Developers Edition released.

Before the release, I also join its development as a beta tester — even I was not an active tester. But I witnessed how the bugs posted, how features proposed. And I also join the unofficial MT 3.0b forum.

After the release, I have not had a plan to upgrade as the new pricing scheme. Frankly, I have plan to purchase the license, but not now. So, I am still with MT — read: I have an online journal using MT 2.661.
