Sherina Munaf: The most followed Twitter user from Indonesia

Now, if there is a question: “Who is the most followed Twitter user from Indonesia? I mean, who has more than 1,000,000 followers?”, you got the answer. She is Sherina Munaf  (@sherinamunaf). She is an Indonesian, singer, actress and song writer. And yes, she’s beautiful. :)

She just got his 1,000,000th followers few hours ago. When I write this post, there are 1,000,947 people following. And, just for another information, she is also the first Maybelline New York icon from Indonesia. You can read more about her profile at Wikipedia.

PS: Dear @Twitter, if you want to give your first “Verified Account” to Indonesian Twitter user, I think it’s a great time :)

[Updated 11:46]: Oops. It seems that Agnes Monica (@agnezmo) is already verified by Twitter. Thank you Chika for the info!

Ovi Maps Now with Some Improvements: Short URL and Share Location

One of the things I did after I lost my phone was to synchronize some of phone data between my Nokia 5800 XM and E72. Actually, I only keep my contact and maps. About map, I use Ovi Maps provided by Nokia (see also: Yahoo Maps powered by Ovi Maps) After I added a location using Ovi Maps, I simply sync it to my Ovi account. Not everyday, maybe once in a week or two. Even I don’t visit Ovi Maps website regularly, I’m still thinking that I might need later in the future. And, I need it.

When I visited Ovi Maps page, I saw that there were some differences. It seems that Ovi Maps page has been improved.

One thing I notice is that it becomes more social now. You can easily share a certain location marked as “Favorites” to Facebook and Twitter. This might be useful if you want to share a location. If you don’t have any locations in your Favourites folder, you can easily add one. It’s like: “This is the location. I should bookmark this. Then, when I need it, I can find it easily or even share with others”.

For every location link, Ovi Maps uses ovi.me domain. Yes, it’s shortened, just like what Google Maps has right now.

A gift from Nokia Ovi, and it’s a skateboard

So, the skateboard is for me?  Thank you, Ovi!

Two weeks ago, I left some comments at Ovi blog after they had a new design for their blog. They told the readers that they had some goodies: a skateboard and five shirts. Did I want one? Sure, I did. A shirt should be just great.

Two days ago, I got an email from Niini Kokkonen (the Editor of Ovi Blog) telling that I’m the lucky person who will get the skateboard. And she told me also why I’m the lucky one. I will keep the email for myself. Thank you Niini!

Yesterday, they made an announcement. And yes, the skateboard i for me. But, it’s not mine yet since I haven’t had it in my hands. It will be shipped today or tomorrow. I’ll wait. And, yes… I feel so lucky this time. Congratulation to all other winners!

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Error During Start

Yesterday, on my way home to Jogja from Jakarta, my Nokia 5800 didn’t work at all. Last time I checked before boarding — it was in Soekarno Hatta airport — it worked without any issue. I just switched to “Offline” mode. Few minutes after that, I only had blank white screen with the Nokia logo. Something was wrong, and I decided to switch off my phone. I waited after I touched Jogjakarta.

When I was in the airport in Jogjakarta, I tried to switch it on hoping that it’s back to normal. It gave me the same error. Nothing I could do. Damn! When I got home, I tried to find the solution, and I used these solutions.

Your memory card is corrupted.
Firstly hard reset your device without inserting the memory card. And after hard resetting just insert back your memory card.
If still the problem persits just attach your device to your PC in Mass Storage mode and right click your memorycard and select properties and select tools and select check now..i.e. scan disk your memory card for errors… (source)

This is what I did:

  • Switch off the phone and pull out the memory card.
  • Switch on the phone without memory card. It’s back to normal now.
  • Switch it off again and insert its memory card back, and turn it off.
  • It’s working again.

I was worried that the only solution was formatting my memory card. At least, next time I get this kind of problem, I should know what I must try. Is there any other solution to solve this kind of error?

IDrive for Data Backup Solution

Today, I tried a service called IDrive. It’s an online backup service. Why I need this? The reason is simple: I want to keep my data, just to make sure that I have backup for important files. IDrive data provides many options to choose. For example, if I only need less than 2 GB of backup storage, I can get if for free. But, if 2 GB is not enough, I can upgrade it easily. For example, I can get 150 GB for personal use only for USD 49.50. Or, if I want to subscribe monthly, I only need to pay USD 4.95. Just do the math. :)

To make my computer “connected” to IDrive server, I only need to download IDrive software. Currently, it support Windows and Mac. So, after I have a registered account, I download and install the software. Run the software, fill in the account info and voila! I’m connected. Now, I want to prove whether the backup and restore process is easy or not.

There are already big companies buying other companies or websites on the internet. This is an interesting to follow. But, for individuals the chance to be acquired or bought by other companies to raise money might be to little.

For example, you have a well-designed website, and it has a huge traffic. If selling your site comes to your mind, there is an opportunity. There is a company — who might buy your website — called WM Media. Accourding to its profile:

WM Media was formed in 2007 to provide an outlet for small website owners and large businesses to sell their websites and get a fair price. Additionally, we provide advertising services reaching hundreds of thousands of visitors per month.

Interested? Okey, if you want to sell a website, there are some requirements:

  • Should contain at least 20 pages of unique, well written content of at least 500 words each.
  • The domain is at least 9 months old.
  • No porn, warez, or other questionable activities.
  • Not interested in websites focused on celebrities, legal advice, medical advice, technology, or video games.

Before making a decision to sell our website, it’s recommended to read as much information as possible. Just to make sure that we make a good decision. VM Media also has a blog to interact with its audience. There are many useful references. Look at this example before selling our website:

Try to maintain your website by organizing its tools and features. Get updated on the latest developments of web technology. You should include all the relevant features in your site. When selling a website, try to project a reliable and convincing image of your site for the prospective buyers. If customers are happy, your site will definitely fetch you a handsome amount of money.

Couldn’t agree more. You can sell your website from $300 to $300,000. Just fill in the form and tell them about your website. A good chance, right?

Get Information About Web Hosting Before You Buy One

I have been blogging for about 7 years. During that period, I experienced different types of situation — especially about dealing with many technical stuff. Let’s take the technical aspects of blogs. In my early years, I tried many blog services. And, when I wanted to move forward, I decided to get my first domain and hosting account. But, sometime I was unlucky because I got a bad service — bad uptime, not-responsive support staff, expensive service, etc.

These days, there are many hosting providers out there. Each of them offers many great features, discounts, and the price — sometimes — does not make any sense. The whole idea is that we — as customer — get many options of hosting providers. If we want to buy domain or hosting account, the process is very easy. The difficult part is getting the best service. Sometime, it’s easy. But, it can be tricky at the same time. Reading as many information about webhosting might be the best practice we can do. Just to make sure that we will make the best decision. For example, get the difference between Linux web hosting and windows web hosting.

There are many resources about web hosting articles, one of them is Web Hosting Articles & Tutorials. This site is provided by Web Hosting Rating. There are many useful articles, and those give us answers on common situation in choosing web hosting service. For example, we have a limited budget. A cheap web hosting account might be our solution. There is an article about finding reliable cheap web hosting. The article gives good information to consider:

When looking for a good web host, see if they provide 24-hour support and then proceed onto checking the response rate by sending a ticket with a question and seeing how long it takes for them to reply. The reason for this is simple – you want to get help as quickly as possible if you encounter any problems, or if the host has any problems.

If we question ourselves whether cheap web hosting is good or not, there is another information about this. Sometime, cheap web hosting can be good. Again, choosing a web hosting can be very tricky. It’s always good to spend few hours reading references. The website I mentioned offers many useful articles and it’s not only about choosing cheap or expensive web hosting. It also has articles about cPanel tutorials, domain names, etc. What makes it better is that it is using blog-like design. As bloggers — or even non-bloggers — this should be good because the articles are well-organized.

Free Blog Service from thoughts.com

thoughtscom

There are many free blog services offered on the internet. Because every blogger has his/her own way on using the service, he/she tends to choose the service that can accomodate their needs.

There is a service called thoughts.com. It’s a Free Blog service that’s available for everyone. Even it is still in beta period, but it already offers many features like blog creation, media and multimedia sharing — we can share photos, videos, music files or even podcasts. It also has a privacy control settings so that you can decide who can read your blog (public, private, friends or family). Having this rich-feature service, we do not need to worry about paying bandwidth at all.

About community building, there is also an extra feature: discussion forum. If you want to jump into the crowd with many different interest, you can give it a try. For new bloggers, it’s a good opportunity to build a readership among friends and other bloggers in the blogosphere. Why is it possible? This service is designed to display contents from its members in many ways e.g. providing some sections like “Featured Photos”, “Recent Blog Posts”, “Random Posts”,  Videos, and also “Popular Blog Tags”. Member-submitted contents are well-organized, and it will helps the audience (members or non-members) to enjoy the contents.

Some glossaries related to webhosting

When we jump in to the internet life, like or not, we deal with many new vocabularies. We get new words like email, attachment, domain, and also webhosting. If we deal with blogging world, sometime we see other complicated words to understand like webhosting, dedicated server, virtual private servers, etc.

It’s a good thing if we know the definitions. We do not have to use or have them, but we can keep them as our references. Okey, for example the word dedicated server. We will not only talking about dedicated server, there are some other info we should know like shared hosting, reseller, etc. So, what is dedicated server mean? If we have a dedicated server, it means that we really have our server 100%. We can use entire hard disk, bandwidth and resources our server has. We talk about freedom. For some people who only need small amount of space and bandwidth, they probably do not need a dedicated server, but for a big company or those who have a busy-traffic website, they definitely need one.
