I think today’s current topic is quite interesting — about MovableType new pricing scheme. As noted at Mena’s Corner, about MovableType Developer’s Edition, I personally got confused. Hahaha!
About the new MT pricing, well… I think it is reasonable. Mena gave an explanation on the feedback after the issue launched.
And there are some (I am sure many) opinions about this. I only read some.
- Mark Pilgrim’s Freedom 0 (Now, he uses WordPress)
- Bloggers Assail Movable Type’s New Pricing Scheme (at Slashdot) — and by that, WordPress gives a warm welcome note :)
Now, what about me?
I haven’t decide to from MovableType. I will stay at 2.6x. I have plan of purchasing the license. But I will think twice (maybe more).
As a user (not developer) I have tried some blogtools. Now, their development is amazing. But, as I said, I am not a developer. I am not good at programming. So what I am looking for is something free (yes), easy-to-customize, and suit my need. I do not have plan of building my own blog engine from scratch, because I can’t.
First, about WordPress.
- NOW it has a great features (including plugins and hacks). And until now, it is free, just like b2 Cafelog in the past.
- And I experience that it is easy (yes!) to modify.
- I do not need to rebuild the pages.
- The development is running so fast!
- And (I think) it comes closer to what MT has now. (at least before 3.0)
Secondly, about MovableType
- Multiple weblogs. This is a great features I think. Because… I need this. Now, I have four weblogs on my MT installation. But related to the current issue (New pricing scheme), I do not know…
- The customization is (almost) without limit. Well, in another word: I can customize it just like what I want to.
Yeah… some opinions from me, as a user.
Now, I did an experiment on my weblog. I installed WordPress and imported all entries from MT (actually, not all, only from my main weblog). The import process was running successfully without any problems, and it was so easy. The longest part is creating an export file from MT. But, finally, all went well. If you’re interested, you can visit my WordPress-powered site.
I will still use MT for my weblog while playing with WordPress. Now I do not know much about WP now, but I am sure the Wiki and other WP Resources will explain and feed my brain more and more. We’ll see…
